Wells

I spent the last afternoon in November walking around and around Wells Cathedral. I've been to Worcester and Gloucester in recent weeks and Wells stands out for its cohesion, and relative compactness. It's a beautifully light, calming space, and wonderfully situated within the city.

A century after the cathedral was completed they found the tower was sinking, so the master mason built these "strainer arches" as supports, lending the cathedral so much of its stunning charm.

Vicar's Close. Apparently this is the oldest continuously occupied residential street in Europe. 14th century.
