It’s a wonder to me that so much of our ancient history is still visible in the landscape – and sometimes in such subtle ways – given how destructive, massive and unequivocal our modern building works are. But there you have it: Ancient roads, ridges in grounds, standing stones, the hills themselves. The word palimpsest seems invented to describe these places.
